The Power of the Dog

Often overlooked as a source of power, the dog is an incredibly versatile animal. If used correctly, it can be a source of great strength and courage, and can even be an important tool for survival.

Story

Adapted from Thomas Savage’s 1967 novel of the same name, The Power of the Dog is a psychological thriller set on the American frontier in the 1920s. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons, Kirsten Dunst, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. It received universal acclaim for its cinematography and screenplay, as well as the praise for its performance by all four actors.

The Power of the Dog is a complex narrative that is sure to be a favorite amongst Oscar voters. The movie will certainly challenge the classic cowboy myth. It features a complex cast of characters and an overarching theme of toxic masculinity.

The movie opens with Peter noticing a shadow dog. This is the first of many clues to be found in the film. He goes on to discover Phil’s stash of magazines that feature male models. He also spots a hiding place. In the end, he is able to remove Phil from the picture using his unique skill.

Psalm 22:20

Several interpretations have been offered for the famous Psalm 22:20, The Power of the Dog, as it relates to the crucifixion of Jesus. Some see religious shenanigans, while others understand evil political motives. In any case, the Psalm is a prophecy about the crucifixion of Christ.

The psalm is a part of the third section of the Jewish Hebrew Bible, called Tanakh. It explores themes related to homosexuality, alcoholism, and masculinity. The psalm resembles a mirror image, and its own heading states that it should be sung to tune « Hind of Dawn ».

It refers to the enemies of the Son of David. These enemies were persecuted like dogs. In addition to dogs, the Psalm also mentions lions and bulls. Moreover, the animals are ordered in a mirror image. In this way, Psalm 22:20-21 completes the mirror image.

During the reign of Queen Esther, Jews were living in Persia. They were at a very vulnerable time. This was the time when a conspiracy by Haman to kill all the Jews in Persia was initiated. It was during this time that the Psalm was written.

Complex narrative

Adapted from Thomas Savage’s semi-autobiographical 1967 novel, The Power of the Dog is a modern take on the cowboy myth. This film is the story of a successful cattle rancher (Phil Burbank) and his younger brother, George. It also showcases the changing attitudes towards men over the past century.

This is a methodical, slow film. The first half establishes the Burbank brothers’ dysfunctional relationship. Phil is a cocky cowboy who torments his younger brother. He is a great chess player but a terrible bully. In one scene, he cuts a rawhide rope with anthrax-infected rawhide. He later dies from the disease.

The Power of the Dog is a thematically rich and deeply affecting film. Jane Campion, who wrote the screenplay, has cleverly used a visual medium to analyze the characters’ actions and emotions. She is not afraid to take the time to get to know her characters. The film is a meditation on masculinity and toxic masculinity, but is more about the self-loathing and suffering of a man who represses his true identity.

Subversive example of the Western form

Whether you like the film or not, you’ve got to admit that Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog is a subversive example of the Western form. It draws out latent homoeroticism in the Western genre, and the film does so in a variety of ways: men are bathing in the river, and ranchers are being gayly portrayed. This is a direct challenge to the classic cowboy myth, and to the stereotypes that have become part of American self-image.

« The Power of the Dog » is playing in theaters, on Netflix, and on iTunes, but it’s worth watching for the story alone. It’s based on a 1967 semi-autobiographical novel written by Thomas Savage. In it, Savage tells the story of his step-uncle, William Brenner (played by Robert Duvall), a bully who’s also a skilled chess player. His story is a tale of violence and self-destruction, but it’s also an allegorical story about the dangers of being gay in a country where the homosexual lifestyle is illegal.
